Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster’s editor at large, noted that searches for the word surged due to heightened political tensions. Despite the divide, Sokolowski observed that “polarization” is a term both sides agree upon.
Other top words for 2024 included “demure,” “totality,” and “pander,” driven by pop culture, news events, and political discourse.
