‘Polarization’ named Merriam-Webster’s 2024 word of the year

Merriam-Webster has chosen “polarization” as its 2024 word of the year, reflecting the deep divisions following the U.S. presidential election, according to The Associated Press. The term signifies extreme division between opposing factions, a theme that resonated widely in politics, culture, and public discourse.

Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster’s editor at large, noted that searches for the word surged due to heightened political tensions. Beyond politics, polarization defined cultural debates, from celebrity controversies to social media conflicts. Despite the divide, Sokolowski observed that “polarization” is a term both sides agree upon.

Other top words for 2024 included “demure,” “totality,” and “pander,” driven by pop culture, news events, and political discourse.
