A tsunami warning for coastal California and Oregon was lifted Thursday following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake offshore near Petrolia, California. The quake, part of the seismically active Mendocino Triple Junction, struck 62 miles west of Ferndale, causing strong shaking and minor disruptions.
While evacuation orders were briefly issued, experts confirmed no significant tsunami risk as the quake’s horizontal movement didn’t displace ocean water.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for affected areas, and aftershocks are expected to continue in the coming days.
