Wayne County’s plan to replace an old trolley powerhouse with a new highway facility is facing nearly $1 million in additional costs. The Savannah Highway Patrol Barn project, originally budgeted at $1 million, will now require $978,560 more due to higher-than-expected construction bids.
Bids include $1.25 million for general construction and contracts for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work. Additional costs for design and water extensions have already added $324,000. Demolition of the historic building, deemed too costly to renovate, will be handled by county workers this winter, with new construction beginning in the spring.
The building, once a hub for the Rochester-Syracuse electric trolley line, had preservation potential but was deemed impractical to save. Funds for the project will come from the county’s General Fund Unassigned Fund Balance.
