For the first time in 20 years, Cayuga County is considering job cuts as part of its annual budget. The proposed cuts, which include eight occupied positions—six full-time and two part-time—would save $1.2 million to address a growing structural deficit.
Chair Aileen McNabb-Coleman emphasized the county’s need to preserve its fund balance for emergencies while maintaining a proposed 4% tax rate.
Two of the cuts would come from the sheriff’s office, including a detective and a jail position. Sheriff Brian Schenck supported the move, citing the department’s ability to manage without them. The budget also sets aside $800,000 for repairs to the Cayuga County Office Building.
The Ways and Means Committee began its review of the proposal on Tuesday, aiming to finalize the budget by December 20.
