Helming honors veteran HOF nominees in Canandaigua ceremony

In a ceremony held on October 30 at Fort Hill Performing Arts Center, Senator Pam Helming recognized 21 veterans from her district who have been nominated for the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Each nominee, representing counties including Ontario, Monroe, Livingston, and Wayne, is being honored for exemplary service to the country and their continued contributions within local communities. One of the veterans will be selected next year as the 2025 inductee to the Hall of Fame.

The honorees come from a variety of military backgrounds, with service spanning conflicts from Korea and Vietnam to the Global War on Terror. Among them are Ontario County veterans Eric Lang, Richard Baskin, and posthumous honorees Ermil “Bud” Peglow and Norris “Doc” Conklin. They are joined by veterans from surrounding counties, such as Monroe County’s Joseph Donald Telaro and Wayne County’s Robert F. Heintzelman.

Senator Helming praised the veterans for their continued dedication, noting that many have taken on significant roles within their communities following their military service. “From Korea to Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror, these remarkable veterans served our country with unparalleled honor and dedication,” Helming said. “Many of them returned home only to continue their service within their communities—a nurse who, despite battling PTSD, worked with fellow veterans at the local VA hospital; another who became a foster parent; and others who have coached youth sports and served in their local American Legions. On Veterans Day and every day, we owe them a profound debt of gratitude for their enduring commitment to our nation and each of us.”

The commemorative booklet detailing the veterans’ service stories is available through the New York State Senate website, providing community members a glimpse into the lives and sacrifices of these local heroes.

This recognition highlights the lasting impact of military service members whose dedication extends beyond active duty, shaping their communities for generations.
