New York State is distributing $25 million to 88 volunteer fire departments to enhance their facilities and equipment, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. The funding is part of the state’s Volunteer Fire Infrastructure and Response Equipment Grant program.
Hochul praised the state’s volunteer firefighters, calling them “the best of public servants” and emphasizing the grants’ importance for community safety. The funds are allocated for building new stations or upgrading existing ones, as well as purchasing essential equipment like decontamination systems.
Local recipients include the Middlesex Fire District, awarded $287,226 for equipment, and Sodus Point Volunteer Fire Department, which received $161,020. Other significant recipients are New Hope Fire Department, securing $1 million, and Penn Yan Fire Department, receiving $850,000 for facility improvements.
