The Watkins Glen Central School District has unveiled plans for a $35.8 million capital improvement project aimed at modernizing and enhancing district facilities. A public referendum on the proposal is scheduled for Dec. 17, with voting to take place in the high school’s Board of Education Room from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
An informational session will be held on Dec. 3 at 6:15 p.m. in the Watkins Glen Elementary School auditorium, where district officials will outline the project’s details and answer questions from the community.
District representatives describe the proposed upgrades as vital to maintaining a safe, enriching, and modern learning environment for students, as well as meeting the district’s long-term goals for infrastructure and security improvements. The project will impact several key areas across the high school, elementary school, bus garage, and storage building.
At the high school, planned upgrades include new LED stadium lights, resurfacing of the track and tennis courts, and replacing scoreboards and bleachers. Educational spaces like the cafeteria and auditorium will see renovations, while infrastructure upgrades such as parking lot repairs and HVAC improvements are also in the works.
The elementary school will receive significant attention, particularly to enhance outdoor learning spaces, security, and accessibility. Upgrades will include a renovated main entrance with enhanced security features, new air conditioning for classrooms, and playground improvements.
The bus garage and storage building will also undergo infrastructure and safety updates, including masonry restorations, fire alarm improvements, and preparations for possible future electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
The district estimates that the project will result in a one-time 4.08% tax increase for local residents. However, officials emphasize that state funding will cover a significant portion of the costs, reducing the financial impact on taxpayers. “This modest, carefully planned increase will allow us to complete upgrades that will benefit the community for many years to come,” the district said in a press release.
