The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) has acquired 34 acres of wooded land in the town of Italy, Yates County, enhancing conservation efforts near Canandaigua Lake. This strategic purchase connects the FLLT’s Great Hill Preserve/Nundawao and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s High Tor Wildlife Management Area, creating a continuous corridor of protected land.
The newly acquired parcel, featuring oak-hickory forest and ephemeral creeks, will be transferred to New York State to expand the 6,800-acre High Tor WMA. This land is part of the proposed Hemlock to High Tor Greenway, an ambitious conservation initiative aimed at preserving wildlife corridors and recreational resources.
The FLLT’s efforts have protected over 33,000 acres in the Finger Lakes region, focusing on critical habitats, water quality, and sustainable agriculture, while also providing educational programs on conservation.
