Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) have launched a new major in Public Health Studies, offering students an interdisciplinary approach to understanding public health and its social contexts.
The new major builds on the existing minor and allows students to choose from four concentrations: Health Science, Environmental Health, Global Health, and Health Justice. Courses will cover diverse fields such as biology, chemistry, sociology, and gender studies. Program Chair Jessica Hayes-Conroy highlighted that the major aims to prepare students for various careers, including pre-medicine, community advocacy, and governmental work.
HWS also announced a new course, Critical Social Epidemiology, which will examine the historical and social aspects of epidemiology. Faculty members believe this program will help students become leaders in public health by providing a comprehensive and empathetic understanding of the field.
