Auburn’s old Catholic church will close after 163 years: Holy Family shuttering due to structural issues

Holy Family Church, the oldest Catholic church in Auburn, will close its doors after 163 years due to severe structural and safety concerns. The final Masses are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, according to The Citizen.

In a letter to parishioners, Rev. Stephen Karani explained that an assessment revealed significant damage, including a severely damaged roof, stone veneer, and loose windows. Inside, there is water damage and black mold in multiple areas. The rectory and former Holy Family School also have extensive damage.

After consulting with Bishop Salvatore Matano and diocesan staff, it was decided that the $2.5 million repair cost was prohibitive.
