The Minerva statue, a cherished symbol of Wells College for 156 years, was damaged Wednesday while being moved indoors to protect it from theft.
The college announced the move but later reported that the statue’s head had broken off during the process.
“We have halted work and are consulting experts on moving and repairing Minerva,” Wells College posted on Facebook. “All damage will be repaired professionally, and updates will be provided.”
The statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, has a significant place in Wells College traditions and history.
