What’s next for Family Dollar in Geneva after closure?

How about adding a grocery store to the city of Geneva? That question has been long-debated, and many in the community have wished for a grocery store away from Hamilton Street, and closer to the city’s center. Now, some members of City Council are hopeful to see it happen.

With the Family Dollar on Exchange Street closing soon, City Councilor Jim Petropoulos suggests replacing it with a grocery store.

At the June 5 City Council meeting, Petropoulos pushed for a small, independent grocer to take over the site, citing the need for fresh food in the 5th and 6th wards. The challenge is finding a suitor to take on the challenge of running a small, independent grocer.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture identifies parts of Geneva as food deserts, meaning many residents lack easy access to fresh food.
