The 25th annual Celebrate/Commemorate Weekend is underway in Waterloo, the Birthplace of Memorial Day. The festivities began Friday night with the Henry C. Wells Award Ceremony, where Gina Suffredini, a retired speech and language therapist and Waterloo native, received the community service award from the Waterloo Library & Historical Society.

Events continued with dancing to the band Flint Creek in Lafayette Park and the American Civil War Memorial Illumination and Remembrance Ceremony, which honored the 59 men from Waterloo who died during the Civil War. The Daughters of Union Veterans of Civil War presented the first-ever Preservationist Award to David Duprey.

The celebration continues through Monday, with activities including a parade, Civil War living history camps, arts and crafts shows, boat tours, and a fireworks display. Memorial Day will be commemorated with a parade and ceremonies on May 30th. For a full schedule of events, visit their website.
