Six local nonprofits have reached thousands of individuals over the past six months in the Finger Lakes Region, addressing health disparities with funding from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Health Equity Innovation Award.

Initiatives included community health education at barber shops and beauty salons, mental health counseling, free colon cancer screening kits, and housing for high-risk pregnancies. Organizations like Common Ground Health, Monroe County Family Coalition, and Geneseo Parish Outreach Center have been instrumental in these efforts.

Excellus BCBS Vice President for Health Equity Simone E. Edwards emphasized the importance of these programs in creating a more inclusive society. JoAnne Ryan of Ronald McDonald House Charities highlighted their model program for high-risk pregnancies. These efforts are crucial in bridging gaps in healthcare access and improving health outcomes for marginalized populations.
