Seneca Falls will end leachate agreement with Seneca Meadows

The Seneca Falls Town Board has decided not to renew its leachate treatment contract with Seneca Meadows Inc. (SMI), set to expire at the end of 2025. This decision was made during the board meeting on May 7th, where it was also agreed to delay re-issuing a town operating permit to the landfill until September.

The current agreement, originating in 2012, involves the treatment of leachate at the landfill, which is then transported via Route 414 to the town’s wastewater treatment plant for further processing. The town has expressed significant concerns regarding the financial and operational aspects of leachate treatment, including the costs and the need for potential facility upgrades.

Furthermore, the board heard complaints about persistent odors from the landfill affecting local businesses and schools, emphasizing the community’s health concerns. The decision to postpone the landfill’s permit renewal reflects ongoing issues and the town’s intent to address these in forthcoming negotiations.
