REPORT: Did Wells College accidentally release closure announcement over the winter?

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Did Wells College accidentally signal that they were shutting down months before a formal announcement was made? While college officials have been adamant that the decision was made in the last two weeks, with official word coming to staff and students on April 30th, new reporting by The Citizen complicates that narrative significantly.

Three months prior to the official notification, a premature announcement of Wells College’s closure was found on its website by the Auburn-based paper. It was apparently a draft notice on the college’s site, suggesting an impending shutdown. The draft included a statement from President Jonathan Gibralter, expressing heartbreak over the devastating news, though it still contained placeholders indicating it was not finalized.

When The Citizen reached out to Wells College officials they dismissed the announcement as inaccurate, attributing it to being an outdated version of a draft from the early-COVID-19 days. The announcement was then removed from the College’s website.

FingerLakes1.com has reached out to Wells College officials repeatedly since the announced closure on April 30th with no response.
