The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office announced the capture of Rexford (Ely) Smith, 40, from Caitlin on Tuesday, following his involvement in a menacing incident on Mill Hill Road in the town of Dix. Smith was charged with multiple weapons offenses, including third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and other related misdemeanor charges.

The arrest followed a tense weekend that began with a 911 call early Saturday morning reporting gunfire in Dix. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, leading to an intensive search. The situation escalated as officers tracked Smith to a secondary location on State Route 414 in the town of Catlin, where emergency protocols were quickly enacted.

Smith was subsequently located and taken into custody without further incident and was transported to Schuyler County Jail for a CAP arraignment. The sheriff’s office has reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat following Smith’s arrest.
