REPORT: Wells College criticized by accreditor for mishandling closure announcement

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education criticized Wells College for failing to adequately plan and notify the accrediting body in a timely manner regarding its decision to close.

Earlier this week Wells College announced its closure plans to the commission just a day before making a public announcement. The new reporting about the accrediting body’s concerns for Wells students comes from The Auburn Citizen.

The accreditor has now requested that Wells College submit its teach-out plans, which facilitate student transfers to other institutions by May 13 for approval, according to The Citizen.

In response to the college’s notification, the commission emphasized that Wells College had not properly prepared for closure by gaining prior approval for such a substantive change.

This oversight has prompted the commission to place the college on probation due to insufficient evidence of compliance with accreditation standards. The closure, which has been roundly criticized, will impact a few hundred students, as well as nearly 200 staff.
