The Yates County Republican Committee convened on April 25 to finalize plans for their annual “Taste of Yates-American Picnic.” The event is set for May 4 at Seasons on Keuka Lake in Penn Yan, featuring auctions of high-value items like vacations and boat tours, alongside a friendly “basket challenge” among town committees. The picnic, now in its 16th year, aims to raise funds for local Republican candidates, with tickets available online at a pre-sale price of $50, increasing to $60 on the day.

During the meeting, Sheila Burt, the Republican Commissioner for the County Board of Elections, briefed the committee on the upcoming June 25 primaries. The notable primary will be for the Potter town clerk, with candidates Deb Adams and Chandra Gilman. Additionally, challenges to notable Republican candidacies, including those for Rep. Claudia Tenney and Mike Sapriacone, are under review, with decisions expected by May 6.

The committee also reviewed changes to state election laws and the introduction of a vote-by-mail ballot option to enhance voter turnout. Discussions also covered the strategic placement of the Republican election headquarters and the next meeting scheduled for May 23, highlighting openings in the committee due to retirements and relocations. Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out for more information or to join.
