Penn Yan village board clarifies position on historic Cupola

The Village of Penn Yan is in the spotlight following accusations from the Empire State Winery Cupola Restoration Project that the village board went back on a previous decision to allow the historic Cupola’s placement in Angler Boat Park.

The village, however, clarified in an update that while it had considered the location for fundraising efforts, it never formally committed to situating the Cupola there.

The dispute emerged amidst the Restoration Project’s efforts to preserve the Cupola, once atop Yates County’s first winery, aiming for its restoration and public display as a piece of local heritage.

The village has expressed concerns over the Cupola’s current condition and potential as an “attractive nuisance,” raising liability and vandalism fears.
