What’s being done to address the workforce shortage in the Finger Lakes? Unemployment rates are historically low. Most counties in the region reporting 3.5-4.25% jobless rates. That means employers are competing for a smaller pool of workers than ever before. Making matters worse, population decline has exacerbated the problem. For example, the National Institute for Health Care Management reports that 61% of primary care health professional shortages are in rural regions. And since 2005, 181 hospitals serving rural communities have closed. However, workforce challenges aren’t limited to the healthcare. Agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and hospitality all face worker shortages.

Today on Inside the FLX we’re talking with Lynn Freid, from Finger Lakes Works, otherwise known as the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board. This organization is tasked with bridging the gap and identifying opportunities for workforce development in the region. She talked about the trends they’re seeing, as well as the long-term goals here.
