In April, another distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments is underway. Recipients will see their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards reloaded on different dates based on the recipient’s home state.

SNAP aids low- and no-income households nationwide in purchasing groceries. These benefits, commonly known as food stamps, are disbursed monthly to eligible individuals.
Funds are loaded onto EBT cards, allowing SNAP beneficiaries to make purchases at participating retailers.
However, payment dates vary depending on the recipient’s state or territory of residence. While the federal government allocates the funds, individual states establish their own payment schedules, resulting in disparities even within the same state.
For instance, in Connecticut, payment dates correlate with the first letter of the recipient’s last name, with distributions spanning the initial three days of the month.
Meanwhile, Alabama’s disbursement dates are determined by case numbers, with variations from the beginning to the latter half of the month.
Certain states, particularly those with smaller populations like Alaska and Rhode Island, conduct all SNAP payments on a single day.
Earlier this year, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack cautioned over 40 states and territories regarding the timely execution and delivery of SNAP services, citing numerous failures to meet federal standards. Notably, Alabama, Idaho, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Vermont were exempt from Vilsack’s advisory.
