Ovid proposes ban on new campgrounds amid redevelopment plans at former Boy Scout camp and Willard Psych

The Ovid Town Board is considering a one-year moratorium on the establishment or expansion of campgrounds within the town, prompted by redevelopment interests in two major properties, including the former Boy Scout Camp Babcock-Hovey and the vacant Willard Psychiatric Center.

A public hearing to discuss the proposed home rule local law is slated for April 10 at the Papa Bear courthouse. Residents are encouraged to voice their opinions at the hearing or submit comments via email in advance.

The initiative aims to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of Ovid’s residents by allowing the town to assess potential impacts on its character and infrastructure from such developments.

The law outlines procedures for property owners affected by the moratorium to apply for variances due to undue hardship, highlighting the town’s commitment to considerate and responsible planning.
