Poachers ticketed for illegal shooting of snow geese in Seneca and Cayuga counties

Two individuals were ticketed for shooting at snow geese from the side of the road in the town of Junius on Leap Day. Acting on information provided by Forest Rangers, Lieutenant Thomas initiated an investigation into the incident that occurred on February 29. A witness’s account led authorities to an address in Aurora where one of the subjects admitted to the illegal activity.

Utilizing a semi-automatic shotgun with an extended tube, the pair shot geese from their vehicle, contravening multiple wildlife conservation regulations. They left three of the geese to die in the field, picking up only one. Environmental Conservation Officers Colesante and McCabe issued 10 tickets to the poachers for offenses including wanton waste, discharging a firearm across a public highway, and using a semi-automatic shotgun capable of holding more than six rounds.

The tickets, addressing violations like illegally taking wildlife from a motor vehicle and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, are returnable to Junius Town Court.
