Canandaigua votes to approve red light cameras for traffic safety

Canandaigua City Council has given the green light to the installation of red light cameras, aiming to enhance traffic safety within the city.

During the council meeting on Thursday, city officials underscored the technology’s role in deterring red light violations and speeding, particularly in residential and school areas.

City representatives emphasized the initiative’s focus on public safety over revenue generation, highlighting the potential of the cameras to save lives. They pushed back on the notion that the cameras were intended to ‘generate revenue’.

The resolution, which also includes plans for a comprehensive traffic study to identify optimal camera locations, will be forwarded to the State Legislature for final ratification. The city’s move aligns with broader efforts to utilize technology in curbing traffic infractions and enhancing pedestrian and driver safety.
