Tompkins County advances Center of Government project with department relocations

Tompkins County Legislature has made significant progress on their Center of Government initiative, confirming the relocation of 16 county departments to a new building on the 300 block of North Tioga Street in Ithaca.

The proposed facility, boasting 55,000 square feet at an estimated construction cost of $40 million, is part of a broader effort to centralize government operations. Additional renovations are planned for the Old Jail Building and the Daniel D. Tompkins Building to accommodate expanding office and worker needs, according to The Ithaca Voice.

The new center aims to house key departments including the Assessment Department, Board of Elections, and the District Attorney, among others, with special provisions for voting machine storage.

Meanwhile, the Old Jail and Daniel D. Tompkins buildings will see enhancements to support the Department of Planning and Sustainability, the Transportation Council, and provide new community meeting spaces.
