A homeowner used an exterior hose during a late night fire in Gorham while firefighters were en route to prevent it from being worse.

On Thursday around 10:30 p.m. deputies along with firefighters from Gorham Fire and EMS, as well as Finger Lakes Ambulance were dispatched to County Road 17 for smoke inside a residence.

According to a news release, investigators found that a small appliance caught fire near the rear of the residence, and was located under a desk.

The fire began to spread to the desk and walls of the room, when the homeowner Ricky Royer, 30, of Gorham used an exterior water hose to put out the fire before first responders arrived.

The fire resulted in minor damage to the home and both were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Gorham ventilated the home and extinguished remaining hot spots ensuring it was safe for the residents to return.
