United Flight destined for Ithaca diverts to Newark due to emergency

United Express flight 4181, operated by GoJet, was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport after declaring an in-flight emergency. Originally scheduled to arrive at the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport at 3:48 p.m., the flight experienced flight control issues approximately 25 miles from its destination.

Emergency response teams from Lansing, Dryden, and Cayuga Heights were dispatched to the Ithaca Airport in preparation for the aircraft’s arrival. However, they were later released as the plane, a CRJ commuter jet, diverted back to Newark. FlightRadar24 indicated the plane’s expected landing time at Newark at 4:05 p.m., with the actual touchdown occurring at around 4:20 p.m.

Passenger Adam Abelson, onboard the flight, reported the issue was related to the plane’s flaps. The flight was subsequently cleared for a return trip to Ithaca after refueling, with a revised estimated arrival time of 6:34 p.m. The airport’s deputy director Josh Nalley confirmed the precautionary measures taken due to the aircraft’s size, emphasizing the successful landing in Newark.
