Town of Ontario adopts 4-6 month moratorium on retail cannabis businesses

The Town of Ontario, amidst New York State’s processing of retail cannabis business licenses, has decided to temporarily halt the establishment of cannabis dispensaries.

A public hearing was held on Monday to gather community input before the adoption of a local law.

This law will enforce a four-to-six-month moratorium on applications, approvals, and permits related to cannabis retail dispensaries.

The move isn’t to prohibit cannabis retail shops permanently but to allow the town time to establish appropriate guidelines.

Officials said that the moratorium is to develop regulations for the location, appearance, and operational hours of these shops.

Concerns were raised about the potential for overt advertising and the need for aesthetic considerations in business setups.

While the town acknowledges the state’s role in licensing, it seeks to use its reserved powers for local regulation.
