Geneva prepares for rare total solar eclipse with free resources and events

Geneva is gearing up for a remarkable astronomical event on April 8, 2024 – a total solar eclipse. This rare occurrence, where the moon completely covers the sun, will be visible in Ontario County from 2:07 PM to 4:34 PM, with total darkness at 3:32 PM. Such an event won’t happen again in North America until 2144. To help residents safely enjoy this experience, BluePrint Geneva, in collaboration with local organizations and astronomers, is offering free resources and training.

BluePrint Geneva is focusing on equipping the community with the necessary tools, like solar eclipse viewing glasses, essential for eye safety during the eclipse. They are also coordinating with schools and city officials to identify safe viewing locations with trained leaders. An eclipse training session, hosted by astronomer Doug Reilly, is scheduled for February 3 at the lakefront Welcome Center.

In anticipation of the eclipse, BluePrint Geneva and the Geneva Family YMCA are organizing a 5K fun run on April 7. Registration for the event and requests for free eclipse glasses can be made through the BluePrint Geneva website or by email. This community initiative ensures that Geneva’s residents can witness and celebrate this extraordinary celestial event safely and informatively.
