Sun Country’s Expanding Routes: New Services Set to Launch From Syracuse Hancock International in 2024

Starting in June next year, Sun Country Airlines will begin a new service at Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR). This development comes as SYR has emerged as an increasingly important hub for travelers within the region, as evidenced by the airport’s recent rise in passenger traffic.

The Success of Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country has carved a niche for itself in the industry as a Minnesota-based hybrid low-cost carrier. One way it stands out from the competition is by combining the low fares typically associated with budget airlines with some of the passenger comforts found on full-service carriers. This approach has found Sun Country catering to cost-conscious travelers who don’t want to completely compromise on comfort.

The success of this strategy has led to expansion, and today, you can find flights with Sun Country Airlines to destinations throughout North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The airline offers 85 nonstop routes in the US alone, and it has almost 50 Boeing 737s in its fleet. Sun Country primarily focuses on leisure travel, but they even have charter services for groups seeking something more private. Focusing on a specific part of the market has been a big part of the carrier’s success.

New Services at Syracuse Hancock International

The new services being launched at Syracuse Hancock in 2024 are good news for the region. With the first flight taking place on June 6th, travelers can connect to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

These midday nonstop flights are set to take place twice each week, every Sunday and Thursday. The service will be seasonally run, and connections will be offered to big West Coast cities, including Seattle and Los Angeles.

Sun Country will use their comfortable and reliable Boeing 737-800s for this new service, with just under 190 seats per plane. Travelers can currently book flights on this route up until September 1st, 2024, and this announcement means that Syracuse Hancock International Airport is now servicing 30 different destinations with nonstop flights.

Syracuse Hancock’s Growth

The expansion of Sun Country services from Syracuse Hancock promises to impact both the airport and the Central New York region. Given that Sun Country plans to expand into other cities in New York, this will add to already existing Buffalo routes.

Given that the airport is not far away from great tourist attractions like the scenic Finger Lakes wine region and the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains, the boost in connectivity should serve as a boon not just for the airport, but also for regional tourism.

Just as the news was announced for these new plans, Syracuse Hancock was already preparing for a busy holiday season. Over the Thanksgiving period alone, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority was projecting 58,000 passengers to come through the airport. This projection was a record-breaking number and represented an 8% increase compared to 2022 passenger counts.

This expectation led to the Airport Authority taking steps to expand parking capacity even further, as well as opening up the TSA checkpoints earlier than usual. Although it’s common for travel demand to rise during this period, these types of actions may need to become permanent fixtures in the airport’s future.

When you combine these numbers with plans from those like Sun Country, it shows the success of the region and this new partnership is great news for both sides. Those in Syracuse will benefit from increased ease of travel and money spent within the region, while for Sun Country, this is the next step in their expansion plans. It remains to be seen where things will head next, but it’s certainly an exciting time for Central New York.
