Kayla Perrotta, a resident of Oswego, is facing charges related to a fatal car crash in Wayne County last year.

The August 4, 2022, accident resulted in the death of 5-year-old Joseph Zufelt and injuries to five other children.

According to police reports, Perrotta, who was 28 at the time, was driving on Younglove Road around 5 p.m. when she lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and plummet into a creek. Of the seven occupants, three were thrown from the vehicle, while the others had to be rescued or managed to escape on their own.

The tragic incident left a 17-year-old with grave injuries, while Perrotta and four other passengers, whose ages range between 10 and 17, sustained less severe wounds. The aftermath of an extensive investigation led New York State Police to charge Perrotta with two counts of second-degree assault and an additional count of third-degree assault.

Perrotta was arraigned in Wayne County Court and subsequently released. She is set to reappear in court on November 28. The incident and surrounding circumstances remain under state police scrutiny.
