The Buffalo Sabres opened the 2023-24 season on Thursday night at KeyBank Center, but it did not go well as they fell 5-1 to the New York Rangers.
Buffalo fell behind 2-0 in the first period and 3-0 halfway into the second before JJ Peterka put the Sabres on the board on an Owen Power rebound. However, that would be the only goal they scored, and the Rangers added two more in the final period, including a shorthanded goal to seal the victory.
The Sabres, who were outshot 31-25, finished 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Devon Levi turned aside 26-of-30 shots in his eighth career NHL game.
The Sabres will try to secure their first win of the season on Saturday when they face the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.
