Steuben County nears completion of first comprehensive planning process

  • Staff Report

Steuben County’s Steering Committee is on track to review the draft of its inaugural Comprehensive Plan by the end of October. Initiated in August 2022, this effort aims to establish a foundational document to guide the county’s decision-making over the next 10 to 15 years.

Supervised by MRB Group and backed by a committee comprising county legislators, local civic, economic leaders, and staff, the plan integrates feedback from eight public input sessions, virtual meetings, and online county website contributions. Once ratified by the committee, the core initiatives and strategic implementations will be presented for public review before being proposed for adoption by the county Legislature.

Deputy Manager Christopher Brewer, a committee member, praised the meticulous efforts of the MRB Group and the committee in outlining key strategies. The finalized plan, which will enable Steuben to seek funding from state and federal entities, is anticipated to highlight objectives such as supporting agricultural growth, main street revitalization, bolstering local businesses, and enhancing transportation. Other targeted goals include promoting medical transport, attracting younger workers, offering quality housing, and pursuing sustainable clean energy development.
