Governor Kathy Hochul has revealed that 400 employers across New York State are prepared to hire migrants and asylum seekers, with over 200 of these job opportunities located in the Finger Lakes Region.
These positions span various sectors, including healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing. While the openings are available to all New Yorkers, Murad Awawdeh, executive director for the New York Immigration Coalition, told WHEC-TV that asylum seekers are ready to work, emphasizing their advanced degrees and diverse skill sets, from engineering to legal expertise.
In connection with the employment announcement, Tuesday also saw the initiation of the Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelan asylees, expediting their employment eligibility process. Meanwhile, other asylum seekers typically face a waiting period of several months before they can legally work.
