The Newark Police Department (NPD) recently promoted Officer Ethan Derr to the rank of Police Sergeant, effective September 18.
A Newark High School graduate, Derr served four years in the US Marine Corps, earning the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for Leadership. He gained experiences as an infantryman and a squad leader with the Marine Corp Honor Guard before transitioning to law enforcement.
After starting his law enforcement journey with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in 2018, he joined the NPD in January 2020, demonstrating consistent leadership skills and ethical standards throughout his tenure.
Mayor Taylor and Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett lauded Sergeant Derr’s rapid advancement and substantial contributions to the department, recognizing his integrity, compassion, and collaborative spirit. They expressed confidence in his ability to be a pivotal figure in the department’s ongoing development and evolution. Sergeant Derr, a devoted family man, will officially be sworn in at the Newark Village Board meeting on September 25.
