Mets edged by Phillies in series opener

The New York Mets (71-82) put up another fight against a playoff-contending team but fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies (84-69) in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night.

Mark Vientos hit his third home run in the last two games, raising his season total to eight. Jeff McNeil doubled home a run while Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez added RBI.

David Peterson surrendered four of the five runs in four innings. Jeff Brigham allowed a run in relief of Peterson before Grant Hartwig tossed 2.1 scoreless frames.

The Mets will try to bounce back in the second game of this four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Tylor Megill is the scheduled starter for New York.
