The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a heat advisory effective from noon to 7 p.m. today for the entire Finger Lakes region, encompassing parts of Central New York and the Southern Tier.
With heat index values expected to reach up to 95 valleys are anticipated to experience the most intense heat.
Residents are urged to exercise caution: drink adequate fluids, seek air-conditioned spaces, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. The advisory also emphasizes the risks of leaving children and pets in vehicles, even momentarily.
For those engaging in outdoor activities, early morning or evening hours are recommended to minimize heat-related risks. Familiarity with symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, can be life-saving. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggests taking frequent rest breaks in shaded areas. In instances of heat emergencies, individuals are advised to call 9-1-1 immediately.
The heat is going to continue into the work week, as temperatures remain in the 90s through Thursday.
