Wayne County dispatcher assists in rare childbirth over the phone

In a rare event, Dispatcher Robert Montemorano of the Wayne County 911 Center assisted in a childbirth over the phone on Monday.

After receiving a call from a man reporting that his girlfriend was in labor, Montemorano acted quickly and provided Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions to help the caller deliver a baby girl at 08:24. The mother and child were later transported to the hospital by Wayne County EMS and Wayne County ALS.

Dispatcher-assisted childbirths are uncommon in Wayne County, occurring only a few times a year. All dispatchers in the area are trained to International Academies of Emergency Dispatch standards, ensuring readiness for such events. Katie Dean, 911 Operations Manager, praised Montemorano’s calm coaching and professionalism, stating, “I am proud of Dispatcher Montemorano and the entire Dispatch team. We wish the family and newborn baby all the best.”
