The New York Mets will be without their All-Star first baseman for the next month.
Before Friday’s series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club placed Pete Alonso on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist bone bruise and sprain. The Mets said they expect him to miss three-to-four weeks.
Infielder Luis Guillorme was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace him on the active roster.
Alonso sustained the injury after getting drilled by a pitch from Charlie Morton in Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
The 28-year-old was hitting .231/.326/.536 with a Major League-leading 22 home runs and 49 runs batted in.
This is a significant blow to a team who has lost six straight and is three games below .500.
