The traditional checkout process may soon become a thing of the past as Wegmans tests a new smart cart technology that aims to streamline the shopping experience.
The innovative system, dubbed Shopic, employs cameras and artificial intelligence to identify items placed in the cart, enabling customers to pay for their purchases directly from the cart itself.
A Shopic device is attached to the cart, and as shoppers add items, the AI technology recognizes the products and adds them to a virtual checkout list.
Wegmans is currently piloting the Shopic system at its Amherst and Pittsford locations, in an effort to make the shopping process more efficient and convenient for customers.
