Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died.
He was the first pontiff in 600 years to resign from the job.
Benedict passed away at 95-years-old on Saturday.
Officials said Pope Francis would lead his funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Thursday.
Benedict announced on February 11th, 2013 announcing that he no longer had the strength to run the massive Catholic organization with 1.2 billion members. He led the church for eight years through a number of challenges.
“With pain I inform that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesia Monastery in the Vatican,” a spokesperson for the Vatican said.
He was born April 16th, 1927.
