3,700 private sector jobs added to the New York State economy in October

The New York State Department of Labor recently shared that private sector jobs increased by 3,700 over the month of October.

This brings the total number of jobs to 8,063,300 in October 2022. Overall in the United States the number of private sector jobs increased by 0.2% in October.

From October of 2021 to October of 2022 the number increased by 306,400, or 3.9%. This exceeded the number in the U.S., which was a 3.8% increase.


While this is great news, the statewide unemployment rate increased in October of 2022 as well. The rate went from 4.3% to 4.4% for the month. New York City’s rate went from 5.6% to 5.9%. Outside of the city it remained at 3.3% and did not rise or fall. Overall the total number of unemployed New Yorkers jumped by 10,400. This brought the total from 404,600 in September to 415,000 in October.

The leisure and hospitality industry, which was really struggling, saw a 9% increase in 2022. The next highest increase was in professional and business services with 5%.
