Four churches that were supposed to close in Auburn and Weedsport will stay open: How did it happen?

The Catholic Churches in northern Cayuga County and Auburn that were slated to close more than a year and a half ago have a new lease on life.

St. Alphonsus, St. Francis of Assisi and Holy Family churches in Auburn, as well as St. Joseph Church in Weedsport will remain open.

The churches were recommended for closure in April 2021. There are nine churches in the area and closure was originally recommended due to declining condition and attendance.

However, after public outcry following the news that some churches in Auburn and Northern Cayuga County may be closing – the Diocese of Rochester moved the opposite way – opting to keep them open.

Some other properties associated with the churches that will remain open are still hitting the market though, in an effort to raise funds.
