The week of August 1-7, 2022 is dedicated to World Breastfeeding Week, a chance to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding. Choosing to breastfeed your child is one of the earliest decisions new parents will make. While everyone has different needs and capabilities, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding as the best choice for babies. It helps to protect them against infection, prevents allergies, and is an opportunity for mothers to bond with their children. Breastfeeding benefits the mother as well; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can reduce the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, Livingston/Wyoming WIC and the Livingston County Perinatal and Infant Community Health Collaborative program are hosting an event at Highland Park in Geneseo on August 6, 2022. From 10AM to 1PM, participants will enjoy breastfeeding support, resource sharing, and light refreshments.
The Livingston County Department of Health offers many services to pregnant individuals, breastfeeding mothers, and parents of young children, including breastfeeding information, lactation counseling, supplies like breast pumps, and safety items.
