Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways recognizes volunteers with return of in-person awards & celebratory dinners

The Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways Council (serving 24 counties in New York and two in Pennsylvania) recently recognized the thousands of adult volunteers who give their time and dedication to local Girl Scouts. Each April—National Volunteer Appreciation Month—the council, girls, troops, families and the community find special ways to thank Girl Scout volunteers. In addition, April 22 is Girl Scout Leader’s Day, a national recognition date to honor all adult volunteers who work as troop leaders and mentors to Girl Scouts.

At the end of April and the beginning of May, the council posted online recognitions across its social media channels celebrating volunteers receiving special awards and Year Pins this member year. Some special awards were hand-delivered to volunteers’ homes by membership support staff across all 26 counties and the council once again hosted traditional in-person regional volunteer appreciation dinners and awards presentations for the first time since April 2019 (due to the pandemic).

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of Girl Scouts. At GSNYPENN, every day is volunteer appreciation. They are the fuel powering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for all members across our 26 counties. We can never truly thank them enough for believing in the Girl Scout Mission; sharing their time, energy, and passion; and inspiring girls to make the world a better place,” says Christina Verratti, Director of Membership Support.

The following special recognitions were presented to GSNYPENN volunteers:

Hall of Fame Inductees

Recognizes a lifetime commitment to the Girl Scout Movement within GSNYPENN; the recipient has supported the council in a variety of ways including supporting Girl Scouts in the community, volunteering in a variety of roles and through a financial gift

Susan Swanson, Syracuse, N.Y. (left)

Susan has been a Girl Scout for over 40 years and came to the GSNYPENN council by way of Georgia. She has held a variety of roles across several councils and with Girl Scouts of the USA. She is currently active and lends her time, dedication and many talents to GSNYPENN’s Alum Relations and History & Archives committees. She has helped organize and contributed materials for alum gatherings and the curation of historical exhibits for council events. Susan is likely to be seen out and about sharing her love of all things Girl Scouts. At times, one may even spot her dressed in uniform circa 1912 presenting herself to council members at events as Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon Low. In those moments, Susan always imparts a very authentic, gracious, Georgia-style knowledge, passion, and love of all that is Girl Scouts. Everything Susan does begins with her belief in and for girls. Susan embodies the time-eternal spirit and mantra of Girl Scouting: girls first, girl-led.

Marcia Oney, Chase Mills, N.Y. (right)

A Girl Scout for 65 years, Marcia began her volunteer career with Thousand Islands Girl Scout legacy council and continues at GSNYPENN. For more than 50 years, she’s shared her time, energy, and skills as a dedicated and responsive volunteer with lasting impact. She’s served as a troop and Service Unit leader, board member, day camp and encampment director, new leader mentor, adult learning facilitator, council delegate and all-around leader. With her support, the North Country remains a close-knit Girl Scout community. Marcia and her peers formed North Star group several years ago and ensure Service Units in their region stay connected across many miles, helping leaders carry on Girl Scout traditions and introducing troops to new possibilities. Marcia recognizes the value of a strong volunteer team and appreciates all that her fellow volunteers do. She helps new leaders feel welcomed, seasoned volunteers feel valued and keeps a girl-led experience as the driving force.
