Sheriff: Person dies after jumping from moving Amtrak train in Cayuga County
One person has died after an Amtrak accident on the CSX Railway in part of Cayuga County.
Sheriff Brian Schenck said that around 4:54 p.m. deputies responded to the CSX Railway in the town of Brutus for a report of a passenger who jumped from a moving westbound passenger train.
Upon arrival deputies located an adult male adjacent to the tracks. That person, who was not identified in a press release by the sheriff’s office, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on preliminary investigation, Schenck said it appears the male jumped from the moving train and died as result of injuries sustained in the fall. The investigation remains active- and Amtrak is engaging with the sheriff’s office.
The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time as notifications to family are still underway.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by New York State Police, Throop and Weesport fire departments, Cayuga County 911, and the Weedsport Police Department.
