Gas in California is $4.72 right now, according to AAA. That is $1.30 more than it was this time last year.
The current national average is $3.51 a gallon, so people in California are already paying more.
California currently has the highest gas tax of any state at 51.1 cents per gallon. On July 1, 2022 it is set to increase even further to be in line with inflation.
Many are concerned about the gas excise tax rise, but there is reluctance to cancel it. The increased gas tax would raise about $500 million for other programs statewide.
