The YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is accepting registrations for the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease Program. Walk with Ease is a six-week group exercise program that can reduce pain and improve overall health. The program will begin Monday, March 14, and continue through April 22. A second Walk with Ease series will take place May 9 through June 17. Sessions will take place at the location of the YMCA’s main facility, 50 Graham Road West, as well as in Stewart Park.
Walk with Ease participants will meet with instructors Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for one hour, beginning with a health education session on an arthritis- or exercise-related topic, followed by stretching activities and a 10–35 minute walk. Participants receive WWE educational materials and tools to supplement the group classes.
A free information session will be offered at the YMCA at 11:15 am, Thursday, February 24.
“We recognize that some of those who would love to participate at the Y — or just stay active in their day-to-day — can’t do so comfortably, which means a loss of flexibility, strength and stamina over time,” said Gunnar Madison, Health and Wellness Director for the Ithaca YMCA. “This could be due to arthritis as well as a number of other health conditions. These programs, Evidence-Based Health Interventions, are an important part of how we want to support the wellness of everyone in our community.”
Those who can be on their feet for 10 minutes without increased pain can have success with Walk with Ease. While it is focused on arthritis, participation is not limited by health condition. The program is free for YMCA members, $20 for non-members. Registration is available now at
