New York’s high school graduation rate rose, exam requirements eased during COVID-19 pandemic

The New York statewide high school graduation rate reached 86.1% in 2021, though officials cannot determine how much of a role cancelled Regents exams played in helping some students graduate.

In lieu of Regents exams, which were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students in New York were allowed to gain credit for graduation by passing a Regents-level class, according to Democrat & Chronicle.

NYS Education Commissioner Betty Rosa said she believes the 2021 graduation rate is still significant despites the pandemic’s unclear influence on the number.
